A cheap board with lots of memory can find many uses. Yet another interesting option is RLDRAM-II - the lower latency (compared to SDRAM) can help compensate for the lack of a big cache.

While it may not fit the budget or the plan, having the option of battery driven operation is very compelling. The Low Power Reference Platform (LPRP) from Altera/Arrow shows how it can be done.
